When my eyes popped open this morning at 7:48, my first thought was "shoot, I overslept." But I'm still on the Camino, so what kind of talk is that? I was ready and out the door in 12 minutes flat. Unfortunately that wasn't quick enough to catch the sunrise.
I made my way through towns, forest, even a small logging company, to Fisterra. I saw more pilgrims on the opposite journey as me and today had to follow blue arrows instead of yellow.
With only a quick lunch break, I arrived in six hours. When I arrived, every single person who saw me asked if I was German or just started speaking German to me. I have been wearing the same two outfits for 40 days, except today it was so warm I took the bottom of the pants off to make them shorts. I guess that's how Germans dress.
Low on euros and not excited at the prospect of another albergue, I opted for a hotel for my last night. After checking in and dropping my bag, I walked the last 3k to the light house and the 0km marker, the 'end of the world.' I felt the finality of the moment and was pretty glad I decided to change my route yesterday. Seeing the ocean and a marker that indicated there was no further to go completed the journey.
When I got back to the hotel, I received word that some friends from yesterday were still in town. So, I trekked back up to the lighthouse for the ceremonial burning. I set my towel ablaze. It served its purpose, but all I want is a huge, fluffy towel and not a tiny, microfiber towel. Some things are meant to stay on the Camino.
We grabbed a quick sandwich and then watched the sunset on my last day. The journey has been amazing but it is complete and I am ready to return home.
I've enjoyed your adventure - through your eyes. Wishing you fun surprises when you return. Thank you for sharing. See you in the fall!
