We had another wonderful sunrise and a not so wonderful steep incline right away. It was bitterly cold but with the huffing and puffing, we warmed up fast. I started out with a German and my Canadian friend. After a stop at some picnic tables to film, I walked the rest of the 12k by myself.
I hadn't looked at the map beforehand, so after two hours of walking through a forest, I started to wonder when I'd ever get to a city. I took a snack break and finished my water, so I was really hoping San Juan would appear soon. After probably another hour, I got to the city, saw my travel partners, and joined them for lunch. I felt like a rock star when four Germans I had met a few nights ago walked up yelling "Hey, it's Erin!"
We toured the church and then we set out for another 6k. I stopped in the town of Alapuerca and stayed in a nice little albergue. I meet up with a gal from Romania and a man from Columbus I'd met before. Almost everyone else were pilgrims I hadn't met yet, which seemed surprising. I know more people are joining every day, but I keep seeing mostly the same people so I forget there are others.

The town has an archeological site where the oldest remains of humans have been found in Europe. I could have saved 5€ and two hours having been told that, because the entire tour was in Spanish. The two-minute English translations as we went from site to site were far less informative and animated.
On to Burgos tomorrow!
