Reap Your Destiny

Quote of the day: Sow a thought, reap an act; sow an act, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny.

For the past six weeks I've been dealing with major life change: I am now unemployed. When asked what I do for a living by people I've met since then, I've been trying to get in the habit of saying that I am working from home as a screenwriter. This is true, I am writing as I continue to look for full-time employment, but I don't quite have the confidence in claiming this profession as I hoped I would. This is still a work in progress.

I'm not sure if any of you work from home, but I am finding it to be a challenge. There are far too many distractions and with the whole day ahead of you, you have to put arbitrary deadlines on yourself to get anything done.

In theory, it is easy to say I will write from home, but the devil really is in the details. You can set a goal but you also need to set the steps to reach that goal. As my dad says, "plan your work, and work your plan." That's in the same vein as the quote of the day. You start with the little things, get good at them and make them habits, and you'll eventually live the life you want.

If you know me, you know my love for Microsoft Excel. Every vacation I go on is planned in a color-coded spreadsheet. So I decided to  really buckle down I needed to make a spreadsheet to plan out my days so that I actually have a schedule. I think this will help me stay focused and get lots accomplished at home. Another part of the plan is getting out of my house to write. I'm going to try the local library and see if that is the good work zone for me. Those are two solid steps to help me reap my destiny!

How about you? What ways do you work at achieving your goals?
