Getting what you wish for

Quote of the day: "There are two things to aim at in life: first, to get what you want; and, after that, to enjoy it. Only the wisest achieved the second." ~ Logan Pearsall Smith

It has been six weeks since I was laid off from my job. Even though the last year of working there was insanely stress-filled, it was still a blow to the ego to be let go. However, it gave me an opportunity to spend my days writing, which is something that I have been wondering if I could actually succeed at for many years.

My situation made me think of the scene from the movie School Ties. When Brendan Fraser and Matt Damon are talking about how all the boys at the prep school just have to do what they're told so that they can be rewarded with the life they always dreamed. Matt Damon's character says "We do the things they tell us to do and then they give us the good life. We better damn well hope we like it when we get it."

After only two weeks of being out of work, I was talking to my sister. I was already starting to be stressed about not having a full-time job and thus wasn't very focused on my writing. She encouraged me to allow myself to enjoy the transition and take advantage of this opportunity I have been given.

I encourage you to pause and reflect on your life. I'm sure you've worked very hard to achieve many things. Take time to enjoy them. I'll end with a quote from another classic movie, Ferris Bueller. "Life moves most pretty fast, if you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."
