Spend a day filming in my shoes.

There's a saying about walking a mile in someone's shoes before you judge them. This advice to put yourself in someone else's place is helpful in all situations, but I found it especially helpful on a film set.

This past Saturday I helped produce a short film called The Heist.

On set, I was the assistant camera person. It was a short script filmed in a small house, so we wanted to keep the crew as light as possible. So here I was, filling in a position that I had never done before. I had been a cinematographer on another shoot (the first time for that!) so I welcomed this new opportunity. Plus, the DP had been the DP for my feature, so we already had established good communication.

Erin (AC) and Kristin (DP)

I suppose you'll have to ask her for her honest opinion on how I did, but I did find it enjoyable to be on a film set and not feel the burden of entire shoot on my shoulders. It was nice to be the support for someone who was in turn, working to help the director realized her vision. I was quite happy to continually run for batteries or move a light 7°.

Filmmaking is such a collaboration and I have found it very helpful to experience different roles to truly understand that fact. It helps for communication on future shoots to understand what it's like to be on the receiving end of requests. I had a great day with all of the crew ladies (and Jerry) on the first project for ChiFem Filmmaker Collective.

So if you're just starting out in film or want to expand your network, I suggest getting as many sets as possible. You'll learn immensely from each role you experience!
