Balancing the scale

I've written before about being a female in the film industry, but I'm going to revisit this topic. Not to complain but to shed a light and show hope.

Gender Inequality in Film

About two weeks ago, the New York Film Academy posted an infographic about the Gender Inequality in Film. It's quite alarming. Check it out.

www.nyfa.edu/film-school-blog/gender-inequality-in-film

If you didn't click the link and read it, I'll give you some highlights:
  • 25% of producers are women
  • Only 9% of directors are women
  • A staggeringly low 2% of cinematographers are women
  • 30% of speaking roles are usually women
  • 26.2% female actors get partially naked and 28.8% wear revealing clothes
Seriously, we are weeks away from the year 2014. How is this still happening?!

Don't be part of the problem, be part of the solution

These statistics are from the top films of 2012 and it is true that things are a bit better in the indie world. However, not every woman wants to only make indies for her entire career. We need to make changes at every level of filmmaking.

So, what's a gal to do?

Well, I can only speak for myself, and this gal is going to buck this trend. In my next feature, Shadows of Death, we have a female in top positions: I am the writer/director, Kelli Tidmore is producing, and Kristin Fiduccia is our cinematographer.
Kelli Tidmore and Erin Dalian
Additionally, in Shadows of Death, 60% of the speaking roles are women. And none of them take their clothes off.
